David Wiesner is a prolific and stunningly talented illustrator who has won the Caldecott medal three times in his career, for Tuesday (1992), The Three Pigs (2002), and Flotsam (2007). If you have kids, you just might have these beautiful and strange books on your shelf.
He was in town for the opening of his first retrospective show at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, which collects 70 of his original watercolors used in these books and others like Art & Max, Mr. Wuffles, Sector 7, and his upcoming graphic novel Fish Girl, out on March 7.
We have a nice long talk about his technique, what it takes to create a childrens book, his upbringing and education, and the future of storytelling. It’s a good chat and thanks to Katrina at the Museum for making this happen.
He’s on the web at davidwiesner.com
